Creating Metadata through Collaborative Tagging
نویسنده
چکیده
Since the introduction of social software and Web 2.0 technologies, discussion about the influence and importance of a broad range of new tools for various fields has followed (Safran, Gütl, & Helic, 2007; Boulos & Wheeler, 2007). Considerable potential for Web 2.0-based applications is seen in supporting information retrieval and classification of online resources. The Internet offers a huge amount of information varying in content, format, and quality. This diversity poses a challenge for users seeking specific information. Modern Web 2.0 technologies facilitate the collaboration and sharing of information among users, thus enabling cooperative processes of information search. While in Web 1.0 the user was not integrated into the organization of content, in today’s Del.icio.us-type folksonomy-based systems the user is actively engaged via the newly emerged tag recommendaABSTRACT

Collaborative Tagging Approaches for Ontological Metadata in Adaptive E-Learning Systems
One of the main approaches for creating metadata for learning resources in adaptive e-learning systems has been through the use of semantic web ontologies. This approach is limiting because it doesn’t usually address a requirement for the support of annotators or the requirement for significant effort by annotators in learning ontological metadata domains and technologies. This paper proposes a...
متن کاملApplying Collaborative Tagging to E-Learning
This paper outlines our experiences with applying collaborative tagging in e-learning systems to supplement more traditional metadata gathering approaches. Over the last 10 years, the learning object paradigm has emerged in e-learning and has caused standards bodies to focus on creating metadata repositories based upon strict domain-free taxonomies. We argue that the social collection phenomena...
متن کاملShaping Personal Information Spaces from Collaborative Tagging Systems
The appearance of powerful tools for lightweight metadata creation, such as collaborative tagging systems, is harnessing the power of online communities, although such metadata are limited to human consumption only. In this paper we first propose an abstract model for representing a generic collaborative tagging system which uses RDF as the underlying technology to store metadata created by dif...
متن کاملFostering Knowledge Evolution through Community-based Participation
The ontology development process is typically led by single or small groups of experts, with users mostly playing a passive role. Such an elitist approach in building ontologies hinders the primary purpose of large-scale knowledge sharing. Collaborative tagging systems have emerged as a new web annotation method proving appealing features in fostering users to collaboratively organize informati...
متن کاملOpen Repositories 2.0: Harvesting Community Annotations to Enhance Discovery Services
Introduction Over the past few years, collaborative social tagging and annotation systems that involve communities of users creating and sharing their own metadata, have exploded on the Internet. Examples of such systems include: Flickr, Del.icio.us, Connotea, YouTube, LastFm. Such systems are exemplary of the Web 2.0 phenomena because they use the Internet to harness collective intelligence. A...
